How Does It Work?

“It is intended for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises wishing to demonstrate their SME status, as well as for Public Administration entities, or organisations operating under agreements with them, that are required to verify SME status for administrative procedures, including the allocation of support measures and other forms of preferential treatment for SMEs.”

Eligibility Criteria
SME Certification is primarily based on two factors:
- The number of employees;
- The company’s annual turnover.
Companies are classified as follows:
- Micro-enterprise – Fewer than 10 employees and an annual turnover not exceeding €2 million;
- Small enterprise – Fewer than 50 employees and an annual turnover of up to €10 million;
- Medium-sized enterprise – Fewer than 250 employees and an annual turnover of up to €50 million.
Depending on its classification, a company may become eligible for financing opportunities, SME-specific incentive schemes, tax benefits, and preferential payment terms.
How to Apply
SME Certification is available exclusively online through the IAPMEI Online Services Portal.
The service is free of charge, and no supporting documentation is required. Applicants simply complete the relevant online forms with the necessary company information.
Step 1 – Register Your Company
The first step is to register your company online by completing the registration form with the company’s identification details and creating login credentials.
Step 2 – Appoint the Company Representative
After registration, you must complete the representative identification form, designating the person who will act on behalf of the company in relation to the SME Certification service.
It is important to keep these details up to date to ensure that all notifications are received.
Step 3 – Complete and Submit the Certification Application
The certification form requires information including:
- Company identification details (company name, registered office, tax number, Social Security information, etc.);
- Ownership and voting rights information used to determine the company’s classification;
- Business information, including the number of employees and annual turnover.
Maintaining Your Certification
SME Certification can remain valid indefinitely, provided that the company’s information is kept up to date.
If no changes have occurred since the previous certification, the company simply needs to submit the updated financial and employment information relating to the most recently completed financial year.
The renewal process should only be completed after the company’s annual accounting and tax return has been submitted for the new financial year.
